A new rumor points to the potential power of the Wii U (Digital Trends)

We still don?t know the exact date when the Wii U will descend upon us, but Nintendo?s next offering?and the first console in the next generation of gaming?is stepping ever closer to reality?if the reports and leaks are to be believed.

It is tough to keep a secret when your technology is semi-dependent on numerous third-party developers. Earlier in the year, EA claimed that the Wii U would be?at least as powerful as the Xbox 360 and PS3, and possibly up to 50-percent more powerful. Yet through it all, Nintendo has remained mum on what to expect from its next offering.

That?s OK though, we have the internet.

According to a source that spoke with Wii U Daily, the Wii U is being tested with the following specs under the hood:

Quad Core, 3 GHz PowerPC-based 45nm CPU
768 MB of DRAM ?embedded? with the CPU, and shared between CPU and GPU
Unknown, 40nm ATI-based GPU

While this should be considered a rumor?as all news about the Wii U should be classified as a rumor until Nintendo decides to officially release info?it is in keeping with what we?ve been hearing. With one exception. It is worth noting the insane amount of eDRAM listed, which means that it is either a typo, a confirmation that the source is wrong, or that the Wii U is going to be so powerful that it may become sentient and try to take over the world.

The article also notes that the ?Quad Core, 3 GHz PowerPC-based 45nm CPU? is very close to the Xbox 360 and PS3?which is true as both run 3.2 GHz processors, although the architecture is very different and a direct?comparison?is?pointless?until we have all the details. The source also claims that the Nintendo has been testing two versions, one with 768 MB of DRAM, and the other with 1 GB.

With the exception of the memory listed, it sounds fairly close to the rumors we heard earlier in the year which claimed that the Wii U would be roughly 50-percent more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360, lending a bit of credence to the source.?The Wii U will also support 1080p graphics and Nintendo has confirmed that it is investigating the possibility of 3D compatibility.

The thing that really stands out though is the mention of the possibility of 1 GB eDRAM. To put that in perspective, the Xbox 360 has 10 MB of eDRAM, while the PS3 does not use any. Embedded DRAM is becoming more and more common in both the gaming industry and for computing processors in general, but even the brand new POWER7 processor from IBM that was released just last year only features 32 MB of eDRAM.

That shouldn???t invalidate the rest of the rumor though, as it is far more likely that the Wii U will have some amount of eDRAM, but the 768 MB or 1 GB RAM is referring to more traditional memory. The Xbox 360 has 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM, while the PS3 uses 256 MB. If the 768 MB is correct, that would be in keeping with the ???50-percent more powerful??

But for now it is all just rumor and innuendo, and we may have a long wait before us until we have solid details from Nintendo. ?

Iran says it shot down U.S. spy plane (Politico)

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran?s armed forces have shot down an unmanned U.S. spy plane that violated Iranian airspace along the country?s eastern border, the official IRNA news agency reported Sunday.

An unidentified military official quoted in the report warned of a strong and crushing response to any violations of the country?s airspace by American drone aircraft.

?An advanced RQ170 unmanned American spy plane was shot down by Iran?s armed forces. It suffered minor damage and is now in possession of Iran?s armed forces,? IRNA quoted the official as saying.

No further details were published.

Iran is locked in a dispute with the United States and its allies over Tehran?s disputed nuclear program, which the West believes is aimed at developing nuclear weapons. Iran denies the accusations, saying its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and that it seeks to generate electricity and produce isotopes to treat medical patients.

Iran said in January that two pilotless spy planes it had shot down over its airspace were operated by the United States and offered to put them on public display.

The Islamic Republic holds frequent military drills, primarily to assert an ability to defend against a potential U.S. or Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities.

Tehran has focused part of its military strategy on producing drones for reconnaissance and attacking purposes.

Iran announced three years ago it had built an unmanned aircraft with a range of more than 600 miles, far enough to reach Israel.

Ahmadinejad unveiled Iran?s first domestically built unmanned bomber aircraft in August 2010, calling it an ?ambassador of death? to Iran?s enemies.

Emerging markets will boost oil demand: Petrobas

Emerging markets demand has doubled world oil consumption in five years. To meet rising demand from emerging markets, Petrobas plans to increase production to 3 million barrels a day by 2015.?

Worldwide oil consumption has more than doubled in the past five years, and?Petrobras?plans to grow with it, Chief Executive Jose Sergio Gabrielli de Azevedo told CNBC Thursday.

"In the last five years, worldwide consumption of oil products has grown from three million barrels a day to seven million barrels, said the CEO of the world's third-largest oil producer.

?That growth wasn't from the U.S., Europe or Japan, but from increasing consumption in China, India, South American and African countries.

?As "people move up the income ladder, they consume more energy" in these emerging growth markets, he said.

?At the same time, it is becoming harder and more expensive for Petrobras and its competitors to find new sources of supply.

?"We are going to have a very tight market in 2012," he said. "At the same time, we have low interest rates, which means that by the year 2012 we are [probably] going to see prices above $100 per barrel on average, but very high volatility, because we have a lot of speculative contracts that have been traded in the market right now."

?To meet growing demand, the Brazilian oil company plans to increase production to three million barrels a day by 2015.

?"In order to increase our production we have to add 19 production systems from now to 2015," said Gabrielli. "We have 16 of those under construction right now. We have under contract the three additional ones."

By 2020, Petrobras wants to produce five million barrels a day, he added.

?About 95 percent of the company's $224.7 billion in investment will be in Brazil, but the CEO said Petrobras also plans to invest $4 billion in the next four years in the U.S. The company already has a refinery in Texas and is actively exploring in the Gulf of Mexico.

?Brazil's growth rate, expected to be around 4 percent this year, is better than "the 1 percent or 2 percent you see in Europe and other countries," but not as strong as last year, when the growth rate was 7.3 percent.

"This is going to open opportunities for American companies to move to Brazil and to create jobs in Brazil," Gabrielli said. "We did a lot of creation of jobs already in the U.S."

Australian court extends ban on Galaxy tab sales

SYDNEY (AP) ? Apple Inc. won a small victory on Friday in its global patent battle with rival Samsung, after Australia's highest court temporarily extended a ban on sales of Samsung's Galaxy tablet computers in the country.

Samsung Electronics Co. is desperate to begin selling the Galaxy in Australia in time for Christmas sales, but the High Court's decision means the device can't go on the market until at least Dec. 9.

Apple took Samsung to court in Australia after accusing the Suwon, South Korea-based company of copying its iPad and iPhone. In October, a Federal Court judge ordered Samsung to halt sales of the device ahead of a trial. Samsung appealed, and on Wednesday, a full bench of the Federal Court threw out the earlier ruling and said Galaxy sales could resume on Friday.

But Apple immediately appealed that decision to the High Court, which on Friday said the temporary injunction against sales would be extended for another week while it considers Apple's latest arguments.

"Samsung believes Apple has no basis for its application for leave to appeal and will vigorously oppose this to the High Court," Samsung said in a statement.

The legal back-and-forth is all part of a larger, international battle over the technology giants' competing tablets. Cupertino, California-based Apple struck first when it sued Samsung in the United States in April, alleging the product design, user interface and packaging of the Galaxy "slavishly copy" the iPhone and iPad. Samsung hit back with lawsuits accusing Apple of patent infringement of its wireless telecommunications technology.

The companies have now filed lawsuits in 10 countries. Courts in several nations, including Germany and the Netherlands, have issued rulings that favor Apple.

Apple spokeswoman Fiona Martin declined to comment on Friday's ruling, instead issuing a general statement blasting Samsung.

"It's no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging," Apple said in the statement. "This kind of blatant copying is wrong and, as we've said many times before, we need to protect Apple's intellectual property when companies steal our ideas."

IMF Europe crisis role may not be "visible": Lagarde (Reuters)

SAO PAULO (Reuters) ? The International Monetary Fund is happy to play a behind the scenes role in resolving the European debt crisis, which needs to be tackled with fiscal consolidation and structural reforms, the lender's chief Christine Lagarde said on Friday.

Largarde, in Brazil for the last leg of a Latin American visit to drum up support for more global cooperation, said the risk of contagion from the crisis had materialized.

"I'm very happy if the IMF is in the middle of it, but in an effective way, not necessarily a visible way," Lagarde said in the recording of a Globo News TV news show in Sao Paulo.

Lagarde urged euro zone countries to find a collective, comprehensive solution to the crisis or risk enduring a lost decade.

European leaders are scrambling for a definitive end to a spreading debt crisis that is dragging down global growth and could even spell the end of the 17-nation euro zone.

The crisis has boosted the role of emerging economies on the world stage, but could also prompt some to take protectionist measures, Lagarde said.
