Israel says it killed jihadist in Gaza

Israel said its warplanes killed a senior jihadist militant on Friday, two days after announcing it was weighing a wider campaign in the territory to curb a boost in rocket attacks.

Israel's military identified the man killed as a "senior operative in the global jihad movement" who was involved in planning an attack from Egypt.

Palestinians said that Moamen abu-Daff, known locally as a fundamentalist Islamic Salafi militant, was killed in a raid east of Gaza City that also wounded another man. They did not link the dead man to a specific group.

The Israeli military said that the target was a group of men preparing to fire a rocket into Israel. Palestinian eyewitnesses said they saw militants in the area immediately before the strike.

"Aircraft targeted a terrorist squad that was identified moments before firing rockets at Israel from the northern Gaza Strip. A hit was confirmed, thwarting the rocket fire attempt," a military statement said.

"The aforementioned squad is responsible for the firing of rockets at Israel in the past number of days," it added.

Israeli military sources said on condition of anonymity that abu-Daff had planned and executed the laying of explosives along the Gaza-Israel border fence and "was actively involved in the preparations of the attempted terror attack on the Israel-Egypt border that was thwarted this week".

On Tuesday, Israeli warplanes struck twice at what the military called "global jihad" targets in Gaza, killing at least one Palestinian and wounding 10, Palestinian officials said.

Israel said at the time that both targets were hardline followers of the global jihadist movement, planning cross-border attacks from neighbouring Egypt.

In August, gunmen infiltrated southern Israel from Sinai and carried out a coordinated series of ambushes on buses and cars on route 12, which runs along the Egyptian border some 20km north of the Red Sea resort of Eilat.

The attacks took place over several hours, leaving eight dead and more than 25 wounded.

On December 8, shortly after Israeli troops went on high alert along the border over fears a fresh squad of gunmen had crossed into southern Israel, Israeli aircraft killed two men in Gaza City that the military said had been planning another raid from Sinai, which also borders Gaza.

Palestinian militants fired two rockets at southern Israel on Thursday, after Israeli warplanes attacked "terror sites" inside the Gaza Strip, the army said.

Both fell in open ground without causing injuries or damage.

Early on Thursday morning, Israeli warplanes targeted "terror sites" in central and northern Gaza in retaliation after rockets were fired across the border on Wednesday.

"Israeli air force aircraft targeted a terror activity site in the central Gaza Strip, and a terror tunnel in the northern Gaza Strip," a military statement said, indicating it was a response after five rockets landed in Israel, none of which caused any damage or injuries.

Palestinian security sources said the air strikes hit a training ground used by Islamic Jihad militants near central Gaza and another training ground northeast of Gaza which belonged to Hamas's armed wing, causing no casualties.

On Wednesday, a senior Israeli officer said the military was preparing for a possible large-scale military campaign in Gaza if the Palestinians did not halt their rocket attacks.

"We are preparing and ready for an additional campaign ... to renew the deterrence," Tal Hermoni, commander of the Gaza division's southern brigade, told reporters in remarks widely published in the Israeli press.

Israel's last major operation against Gaza was Operation Cast Lead, a 22-day offensive launched on December 27, 2008 that cost the lives of 1,400 Palestinians - at least half of them civilians - and 13 Israelis, including 10 soldiers.

Media death toll rose in 2011 versus 2010: IFJ (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? More than 100 journalists or other media staff were killed in 2011, up from last year's toll, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) said on Friday, calling on U.N. Secretary General Bank Ki-moon to act to help protect the profession.

Violence against the media was worst in Pakistan, Iraq and Mexico, each of which saw 11 deaths.

One of those killed in Iraq was a freelance working for Reuters Sabah al-Bazee.

In total, 106 were killed in 2011, compared with 94 in 2010. In addition, 20 journalists or other media staff, died in accidents and natural disasters, the IFJ said.

Most of those named by IFJ were frontline journalists. The rest were cameramen, drivers and other media support staff.

The Brussels-based IFJ blamed the 2011 death toll on governments' failure to protect journalists and punish those responsible for violence against them.

It has written to the U.N. secretary general calling for action.

"In a situation where governments are in denial or indifferent to what has become a regular pattern of targeted killings of journalists, it is incumbent upon yourself and the United Nations to remind them of their responsibility to protect journalists," IFJ President Jim Boumelha wrote in a letter to Ban made public on Friday.

The IFJ represents more than 600,000 journalists in 131 countries around the world.

Earlier this month, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reported 66 journalists had been killed worldwide in 2011 and said Pakistan had been the second most dangerous country for news coverage for the second year running.

Marvel wins NYC dispute over Ghost Rider rights

(AP) ? A New York City judge has ruled comic book publisher Marvel Entertainment owns the rights to the Ghost Rider character in the fiery form that originated in the early 1970s.

Federal Judge Katherine Forrest made the finding Wednesday, tossing out the claims of a man who says he created the motorcycle-driving Ghost Rider with the skeletal head that sometimes had fire blazing from it. A Ghost Rider of the 1950s and '60s was a Western character who rode a horse.

The judge says a writer who brought a 2007 lawsuit to claim ownership rights gave up those rights repeatedly when he signed checks containing language relinquishing all rights to Marvel Entertainment LLC.

Telephone messages left with lawyers on both sides of the dispute haven't been returned.

Windows Phone Marketplace Beats Android Market to 50,000 Apps

Though it?s still dwarfed by Apple?s App Store and Google?s Android Market, Microsoft?s Windows Phone Marketplace has been posting some decent growth lately. In mid-November, it hit the 40,000 app milestone and now, a little over a month later, it?s hit another.

According to All About Windows Phone, which tracks Windows Phone app submissions, the Marketplace has seen more than 50,000 apps published to it ? 50,126, to be exact.

Notably, Windows Phone reached that 50,000 app milestone in 14 months, faster than Android, Symbian, or BlackBerry (but slower than iOS which hit it in about a year).

Clearly, the platform?s picking up steam. While it took a little over a year to reach 40,000 apps, it took just 40 days to accumulate the next 10,000.

That bodes well for Windows Phone in 2012. Of course, it needs to drive that growth higher still if it ever hopes to match its rivals in the space. Though a noteworthy milestone, 50,000 apps is still a paucity compared to the App Store?s 600,000 and Android Market?s 500,000.

Sri Lanka oil exploration continues

Colombo - Cairn India, a unit of the British exploration firm Cairn Energy, said on Monday that it hopes to start the second phase of drilling oil and natural gas deposits off Sri Lanka.

During the first phase that began in August, Cairn drilled three wells, but found no oil in the third well, the company said, adding that it will continue to study the other two wells off Sri Lanka's northwestern coast of Mannar.

Cairn Lanka, a fully-owned subsidiary of Cairn India, announced the first gas find in early October at an exploratory well 38km from the second well.

?Following the success, Cairn India has notified the government of Sri Lanka of its intention to enter the second phase of exploration,? the statement said.

The third well, CLPL-Dorado North 1-82K/1, ?was plugged and abandoned as a dry hole on 14th December, 2011?, Cairn added.

A net oil importer, Sri Lanka has also offered underwater blocks to India and China.

The Russians carried out the first drilling in the region in 1971 without any commercial success and the government subsequently abandoned the search until Norwegians helped with new seismic studies in the past decade. - Sapa-AFP

Eccentric Eastern European Automotive Artist Conjures Classic Car ...

Slovenian artist Miha Furlan has ?been on his game? for many years, creating some of the most?eye catching?automotive art that I have ever seen. ?While his focus is always on cars, it is almost never on the same car twice. ?Everything from vintage racers to current supercars, and even bespoke commissions, have seen the deft tip of Miha?s markers, pencils, pens, and watercolor brushes.

While his vision is not entirely limited, it seems that when it comes down to what he enjoys focusing on is the early to mid 1970s international sports car and open wheel scene. ?Certainly not a bad scene to focus on. ?The 1970s were an interesting time in motor racing history. ?While the performance of many road cars completely disappeared in this period, it seemed that all of that performance simply reappeared in the engine bays of racing cars, and they got more powerful with each passing year.

In addition to producing some of the best racing cars of all time, the 1970s produced some of the best racing drivers of all time as well. ?It was the perfect environment to catch the attention of even young enthusiasts.

From this cross section of Mr. Furlan?s artistic endeavors, it is immediately clear that he is a fan of the history of places like Le Mans, Monaco, and the Sicilian Targa Florio. ?Vintage Formula 1, Can Am, and international sports cars clearly dance around in his dreams, and after viewing his work, they haunt mine.

The artist says this about himself ?My name is Miha Furlan and I am 28 years old. I come from a small town called Ajdov??ina in Slovenia. I have been drawing cars for as long as I can remember.? ?Uh, how do you pronounce that, again?

He goes on to say ?I am self taught and I mostly work with color pencils, but I also use markers, pastels and ink. My styles vary from realism to semi abstract drawings. Of course I?m available for commissions and I am open minded to whatever subject you might request.? ?Whatever work he does, it is sure to be impressive.

All art shown is owned by the artist

'Rare' brain disorder may be more common than thought, say Mayo Clinic scientists

Mayo Clinic

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A global team of neuroscientists, led by researchers at Mayo Clinic in Florida, have found the gene responsible for a brain disorder that may be much more common than once believed. In the Dec. 25 online issue of Nature Genetics, the researchers say they identified 14 different mutations in the gene CSF1R that lead to development of hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with spheroids (HDLS). This is a devastating disorder of the brains white matter that leads to death between ages 40 and 60. People who inherit the abnormal gene always develop HDLS. Until now, a definite diagnosis of HDLS required examination of brain tissue at biopsy or autopsy.

The finding is important because the researchers suspect that HDLS is more common than once thought and a genetic diagnosis will now be possible without need for a brain biopsy or autopsy. According to the studys senior investigator, neurologist Zbigniew K. Wszolek, M.D., a significant number of people who tested positive for the abnormal gene in this study had been diagnosed with a wide range of other conditions. These individuals were related to a patient known to have HDLS, and so their genes were also examined.

Because the symptoms of HDLS vary so widely ? everything from behavior and personality changes to seizures and movement problems ? these patients were misdiagnosed as having either schizophrenia, epilepsy, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinsons disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, or other disorders, says Dr. Wszolek. Many of these patients were therefore treated with drugs that offered only toxic side effects.

Given this finding, we may soon have a blood test that can help doctors diagnose HDLS, and I predict we will find it is much more common than anyone could have imagined, he says.

Dr. Wszolek is internationally known for his long-term efforts to bring together researchers from around the world to help find cases of inherited brain disorders and discover their genetic roots.

Dr. Wszoleks interest in HDLS began when a severely disabled young woman came to see him in 2003 and mentioned that other members of her family were affected. The diagnosis of HDLS was made by his Mayo Clinic colleague, Dennis W. Dickson, M.D., who reviewed the autopsy findings of the patients uncle, who had previously been misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis, and subsequently, Dr. Wszoleks patient and her father. All members of the family had HDLS.

Dr. Dickson had identified other cases of HDLS from Florida, New York, Oregon and Kansas in the Mayo Clinic Florida brain bank and knew of a large kindred in Virginia with similar pathology, based upon a presentation at the annual meeting of the American Association of Neuropathologists. With concerted efforts, Dr. Wszolek and collaborators at University of Virginia were able to obtain DNA samples from the Virginia kindred. Dr. Wszolek also sought other cases, particularly those that had been reported in the neuropathology literature, and he was able to obtain samples from Norway, the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada, and other sites in the U.S. He and his team of investigators and collaborators have since published studies describing the clinical, pathologic and imaging characteristics of the disorder, and they have held five international meetings on HDLS.

In this study, which included 38 researchers from 12 institutions in five countries, the studys first author, Rosa Rademakers, Ph.D., led the effort to find the gene responsible for HDLS. Her laboratory studied DNA samples from 14 families in which at least one member was diagnosed with HDLS and compared these with samples from more than 2,000 disease-free participants. The gene was ultimately found using a combination of traditional genetic linkage studies and recently developed state-of-the art sequencing methods. Most family members studied ? who were found to have HDLS gene mutations ? were not diagnosed with the disease, but with something else, thus emphasizing the notion that HDLS is an underdiagnosed disorder.

The CSF1R protein is an important receptor in the brain that is primarily present in microglia, the immune cells of the brain. We identified a different CSF1R mutation in every HDLS family that we studied, says Dr. Rademakers. All mutations are located in the kinase domain of CSF1R, which is critical for its activity, suggesting that these mutations may lead to deficient microglia activity. How this leads to white matter pathology in HDLS patients is not yet understood, but we now have an important lead to study.

With no other disease have we found so many affected families so quickly, says Dr. Wszolek. That tells me this disease is not rare, but quite common. He adds, It is fantastic that you can start an investigation with a single case and end up, with the help of many hands, in what we believe to be a world-class gene discovery.

Obama on political high, but momentum hard to keep (AP)

WASHINGTON ? On a political high, President Barack Obama capped a bruising year by securing a tax cut for millions of Americans ? an achievement that overshadowed Washington's deepening dysfunction and the slow progress of the economy on his watch.

The White House has ended a year with a political victory before. This time around the stakes are higher, and the president is by no means assured of carrying the momentum deep into an election year.

Addressing reporters before heading to Hawaii on Friday, Obama looked like a president in command of the stage again, for now. He left the capital after presiding over a two-month extension of a payroll tax cut ? about $40 per paycheck for someone making $50,000 a year ? that came when House Republicans caved on demands for a longer deal.

Yet on this issue, like many, enormous work remains for Obama after the new year, just when voters begin choosing a Republican nominee to try to oust him from his job.

Obama initially had pushed for a year-long extension of both the Social Security payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits. He got only two months on both because Congress could not agree on how to pay the bill for more without gutting their own political priorities ? the same problem that awaits all sides in the weeks to come.

Although Obama calls a full-year extension a "formality," politically, it is not. So he pushed Congress to work "without drama, without delay" when they return from their own recess.

The whole scene was reminiscent of a year ago, when Obama took a self-described "shellacking" in the midterm elections but still ended up leaving for his yearly Hawaiian holiday on a high note.

In a news conference at the time, a jubilant Obama claimed a "season of progress" after stringing together legislative victories in a lame-duck congressional session, including the repeal of the military's ban on openly gay service members and approval of a new nuclear treaty with Russia.

But progress was short-lived. Obama returned to Washington in January to face a divided Congress and a Republican party prepared to push him to the brink.

This time, Obama left without taking questions from reporters, ensuring no disruption from the narrative all over Washington ? a win for him, a capitulation for House Republicans. Had he engaged the press, Obama may well have been challenged about violence in Iraq since a U.S. troop withdrawal, or his own flip-flop over an oil pipeline included in the tax deal.

Obama may have won the messaging war this December, preventing higher taxes for 160 million Americans. But he gave up plenty to get a deal.

In securing the short-term extension, Obama caved on the controversial Keystone XL pipeline. The president had boldly said he would reject any effort to tie the payroll tax extension to the proposed Canada-to-Texas pipeline; he later gave in to GOP demands to make a decision on the project within 60 days.

Given that the House Republicans' backpedaling far overshadowed the president's compromises, GOP consultant John Feehery said Republican lawmakers are likely to come back to Washington in January even more motivated to take on the president.

"This is a temporary victory," Feehery said. "We're going to go back to the fight once again in a month and a half. This is one battle, not the whole war."

Obama's willingness to stand firm could help rally support among Democrats who have complained that the president too often seems to give in too much.

Obama's hard line at the end of the payroll tax cut talks sent an important message both to his supporters and Republicans, Democratic strategist Karen Finney said. She said both have misinterpreted Obama's prior compromises as a sign of weakness.

"In this instance it was certainly critical that the president not give any more ground," Finney said. "He showed that he does have a point at which he won't go farther."

The economy has been showing signs of coming around, too, which is vital to Obama's chances for a second term. But this is another area in which today's optimism can turn troubling at any time, with outside forces such as Europe's economic woes threatening to dampen the American recovery.

Each year, partisan debate and unfinished business have forced the president to delay departure for his cherished Christmas vacation in Hawaii. This December's stalemate threatened to derail the trip entirely, given that Obama himself pledged to stay in Washington until a deal to extend the cuts was reached.

Obama's original Dec. 17 departure date came and went.

It was only Friday, after the House and Senate finalized the deal, that the White House announced Obama's departure for later in the day.

The president has no public events planned during what is expected to be about a 10-day vacation. He typically spends his days in Hawaii playing golf or going to the beach with his family, though he makes occasional outings for dinner with friends.

The White House says the president's focus will be on spending time with his family. But there will be a small team of advisers traveling with Obama to brief him daily on domestic and international events ? and to help him get ready for the work, and the battles, that wait in January.

Mise ? jour Galaxy nexus

France to pay for removal of risky breast implants

France took a costly and unprecedented leap Friday in offering to pay for 30,000 women to have their breast implants removed because of mounting fears the products could rupture and leak cheap, industrial-grade silicone into the body.

Tens of thousands of other women elsewhere in Europe and in South America have the same French-made implants, but authorities there have so far refused to follow suit. The silicone-gel implants in question are not sold in the U.S.

Over the past week, the safety fears have created a public furor over something usually kept private, even in France. Women, some whose own families didn't know they had their breasts enlarged, marched on Paris to demand more attention to worries about what might be happening inside them. Images of leaky, blubbery implants and women having mammograms have been splashed on French TV.

More than 1,000 ruptures pushed Health Minister Xavier Bertrand to recommend that the estimated 30,000 women in France with the implants get them removed at the state's expense.

Bertrand insisted the removals would be "preventive" and not urgent, and French health authorities said they had found nothing to link the implants to nine cases of cancer in women. The death last month of a woman who had the implants and developed a rare cancer ? anaplastic large-cell lymphoma ? had catalyzed worries.

The implants, made by the now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese, were pulled from the market last year in countries around Europe and South America where they had been sold. The company's website said it exported to more than 60 countries and was one of the world's leading implant makers.

International police agency Interpol put PIP's former director, Jean-Claude Mas, on its most-wanted list, based on a warrant from Costa Rica for crimes involving "life and health." Interpol's website carries a photo of the 72-year-old Mas but no details about his alleged crimes or link to Costa Rica. Mas' lawyer could not be reached for comment Friday.

France's health safety agency says the PIP implants appear to be more rupture-prone than other types. Also, investigators say PIP used industrial silicone instead of the medical variety to save money. However, the medical risks posed by industrial silicone are unclear.

The financial burden of the French government's decision falls on the state health care system, which estimated the removals could cost ?60 million ($78 million) at a time when the country is teetering on the brink of another recession and struggling with debt.

In recommending removal, the government noted the risks associated with major surgery and general anesthesia.

Because of those risks, many women may decide against removal. The government said those women should be examined every six months.

    1. Why layaway angels touch even Grinches

They've been called layaway angels, Secret Santas and even miracle workers. Whatever you call them, the Frank Capra-esque anonymous donors who have been paying off strangers' layaway bills around the country are touching even the Grinchiest of hearts.

    3. First memories may happen as early as 2
    4. Christmas wish: Little listeria victim is home

After the French decision, Britain's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency announced that it doesn't see enough proof of cancer or an excessive risk of rupture to recommend women in Britain have the implants removed. Up to 40,000 women in Britain may have had the implants, even more than in France.

Britain's chief medical officer, Sally Davies, said women "should not be unduly worried."

"While we respect the French government's decision, no other country is taking similar steps because we currently have no evidence to support it," she said.

The president of Brazil's Plastic Surgeons Association, Jose Horacio Aboudib, said it would be premature to have women remove the implants if they are not having any problems. About 25,000 women in Brazil received PIP implants.

"There is always a risk associated with surgery, and there is a cost. In France, the government is paying for it. Here it's not considered a public health risk, so the patient would have to pay for it," he said.

Medical authorities in Argentina and Venezuela recommended closer monitoring of women who have the implants.

In the U.S., concerns about silicone gel implants in general led to a 14-year ban on their use, in favor of saline-filled implants. Silicone implants were brought back to the market in the U.S. in 2006 after research ruled out links to cancer, lupus and some other concerns.

In France, one reason for the alarm was the uncertainty over the ingredients of the silicone used and the risk to internal organs. Also, while all breast implants can burst, especially as they get older, "these implants have a particular fragility" and appear to pose risks of rupture earlier in their life spans than other implants, said Jean-Claude Ghislain of the French health agency AFSSAPS.

France's state health care system normally pays for implants for medical reasons, such as after a mastectomy, but not for cosmetic implants. About 80 percent of those with the PIP implants had them for aesthetic reasons.

Annie Mesnil, who had a PIP implant to replace a breast removed after cancer in 1999, said she was relieved that the Health Ministry "accepts the idea that there is a potential danger." But she added: "It's not enough. They will pay for the removal of the implants, but they will not pay for the replacements."

After the PIP product was recalled last year, a mammogram and ultrasound did not reveal any problems with Mesnil's implant. But Mesnil, 62, had it removed anyway, at her own expense, out of fear.

When her surgeon took it out and studied it, "he discovered it had already burst," she said. "I don't know what's spilled inside my body."

The state health care system only reimburses about 230 euros for implant removal operations, but public hospitals that provide the service for that low fee are rare and overbooked. Most plastic surgeons in France are private practitioners who can charge five to 10 times more than that for a removal. Some plastic surgeons have agreed to lower their fees under government pressure.

Chantal Guerin, a 46-year-old accountant and mother of three, had her left breast removed after cancer and had PIP implants put in both breasts. In 2010, she developed cancer in her right breast.

"One cannot directly incriminate the implant, since there is no scientific proof," she said in an interview. "But we have the right to ask ourselves a lot of questions, because there is a great amount of physical pain involved."

Huntsman campaign blasts Romney for NH jobs record (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman's campaign said Wednesday that jobs lost at a company managed by rival Mitt Romney counter his claims of being a job creator.

Huntsman's campaign and allies said Romney's venture capital firm oversaw more than 100 layoffs in New Hampshire while it eventually reaped millions in profits.

An Associated Press report this week found that The Holson Burnes Group, controlled by Romney's Bain Capital LLC, closed plants in New Hampshire and Gaffney, S.C., as it shipped other jobs overseas.

Former Claremont, N.H., Mayor Scott Pope ? a Huntsman supporter ? said Holson Burnes had told local officials the plant was closing in 2005 so it could expand operations in Mexico, long after Bain relinquished control of the company. But a bulk of Holson Burnes layoffs and furloughs occurred in the early 1990s under Bain's ownership.

The AP's review of financial and regulatory documents in the case of Holson Burnes contrasts with Romney's statements during the GOP presidential campaign about his success creating jobs in the private sector. It showed how Holson Burnes trimmed its work force by hundreds while Bain eventually earned a 20 percent return on its investment.

The economic fallout from Bain's decisions struck hardest in New Hampshire and South Carolina, early primary states that will shape the Republican race and Romney's White House prospects. Romney knows President Barack Obama and other Republican contenders will be picking apart his tenure at Bain.

"President Obama and his friends on the left are continuing their attacks on the free-enterprise system, and by attacking free enterprise they are willingly dividing Americans," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul told the AP in response. "Mitt Romney has a quarter-century of experience working with entrepreneurs and real businesses in the real economy."

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, was spending the rest of the week touring New Hampshire by bus.

National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day Held In San Francisco (PHOTOS)

Roughly 100 homeless individuals died on San Francisco's streets during this past year alone, and on Wednesday night, their lives were recognized for a final time.

Dozens of advocates attended a vigil outside City Hall as part of the National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day, an annual event aimed to raise awareness about the growing homelessness problem in America. Similar ceremonies were held in 150 cities throughout the United States.

(SCROLL DOWN FOR PHOTOS)

"It is really important for us to honor folks who have died without housing so that we can step up our efforts to ensure all people have a safe and dignified place to live," Jennifer Friedenbach, executive director of San Francisco's Coalition on Homelessness, which co-sponsored the event, told the San Francisco Chronicle.

San Francisco is often dubbed the "homeless capital of America," as our mild climate and progressive social services provide friendlier streets than other cities. A 2009 special report in the Chronicle estimated as many as 5,000 "chronically indigent" individuals living without shelter here.

National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day has been taking place on Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year and the first day of winter, since 1990. "According to organizers, [Winter Solstice] represents the coldest, darkest time for the homeless population," Salena Bailey, director of programs for San Francisco Network Ministries, the vigil's other co-sponsor, told The Huffington Post.

Wednesday's vigil involved chanting, signing, prayers and a reading of the names of the recently deceased. Take a look at images from the program below:

Charlie Sheen Vacations, Poses for Photo with "Modern Family"

Forget the Pritchetts and the Dunphys. Charlie Sheen has given new meaning to the term "modern family."

The actor posted a photo this week of himself, ex-wife Denise Richards and three children at an undisclosed tropical location. Two of those children, twins Sam and Lola, belong the former couple. The third, six-month old Eloise, was adopted this year by the terrible actress.

Charlie Sheen, Denise Richards and Kids

"What's better than a modern family vacation!?! love spending winter break w/ @denise_richards & my kids!" Sheen wrote on his WhoSay account, having clearly come a long way from a few months ago.

Has Sheen finally realized the true definition of winning? It's all about family, people.
