Small Business Security Spending to Top $5.6 Billion in 2015: IDC ...

Small to medium-size businesses (SMBs) are continuing to spend on security technology which showed strong growth and is set to pass $5.6 billion in 2015, according to a research report from IT analytics firm International Data Corporation (IDC). Midmarket spending on security products and services is forecast to double the 5-6 percent growth in overall SMB IT spending, the report said.

As businesses adopt cloud computing and the prevalence of connected mobile devices?not to mention IT?s struggled with fast-growing bring your own device (BYOD) programs?security spending has risen as SMBs adapt these technologies to boost their resources. Charles Kolodgy, vice president of security products, highlighted the expansion in key capabilities, particularly Web-based ones, as a driving force behind small business investment in security. ?Small and medium-sized businesses have as much need for information technology as much larger companies,? Kolodgy said in prepared remarks. ?They also require security because they are a target of cybercriminals. But there are unique issues that prevent SMBs from just buying what large enterprises purchase.?

The report determined endpoint, messaging, network, Web, identity and access management (IAM), and security and vulnerability management (SVM) as the six most important security product areas and predicted all would exhibit strong growth through 2015, while SMB spending on software-as-a-service and security appliances are both forecast to grow at double digit rates in the coming years, offering new opportunities for technology suppliers.

IDC also noted in the report that an effective Web site, education, dedicated products, appliances, SaaS, and channel support were six critical areas for supplier success in the SMB space, but also pointed out it was unlikely for a supplier to dominate all six areas of the market, though some may have the expertise to stand out in three or four specific areas. SMBs in general have a keen eye toward IT security investment, with just under a fifth of survey respondents with less than 100 employees citing security management and improvement as a top priority. Among medium-size firms (100-999 employees), 36 percent of respondents felt the same way, according to the report.

?SMBs are more focused on security as a way to gain access to more capabilities, but less focused on security as a cost to be reduced once minimum standards are met,? Ray Boggs, vice president for small and medium business markets research at IDC said in a prepared statement. ?To meet the needs of SMB customers, vendors need to understand three components,? Boggs continued. ?These are: understanding the big picture SMB opportunity, understanding the product needs of SMB prospects and understanding the SMB purchase process.?

Disabled visitors face high hurdles to London Olympics

The Olympic and Paralympic Games ? which London has promised will be the most accessible and inclusive ever ? are just weeks away. All sports venues are fully equipped for disabled visitors, but many city-goers with physical impairments say they still feel like second-class citizens on public transport.

?I am shocked at how disabled I am here; I have never felt so handicapped,? said Laura Hamilton, a 28-year-old American with muscular dystrophy living in London.

?I?m scared to go out on my own,? said the Californian, who quit her job in San Francisco and moved to Britain in March ?to see the world? before her condition deteriorates.

The London Underground is by far the fastest way to get around the city, but with just a handful of stations in the historic heart of the capital offering step-free access, Hamilton said ?it?s more of a novelty for wheelchair users.?

All black cabs are accessible, but using taxis or a car as a primary form of transportation is prohibitively expensive for most residents, so wheelchair users rely heavily on buses.

But Hamilton, who uses a small electric scooter, said that ?most times the drivers don?t want to pull into the curb so I?m told I can?t get on at all.?

Paralympian crawls off train
Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, who won 11 gold medals for Great Britain in five Paralympic Games and is a board member of Transport for London (TFL), the city's group responsible for the transportation system,?described how she recently had to crawl off a train.?

?My train was late into Kings Cross Station and the station had pretty much closed and there was no one who came to get me,? said the parliamentarian and TV presenter, who was born with spina bifida.

?So I got out of my chair, pushed my chair off, and crawled out of the train and got back into it,? she said.

Despite that incident and other cases of being ?forgotten? on long-distance trains, the athlete said the situation within London has improved greatly in recent years.

?But people coming from countries like the U.S. and Canada will find it a bit more tricky,? she said.

Dating back to 1863, the London Underground is the oldest metropolitan railway in the world. Disabled access renovations only began after a wheelchair ban was lifted less than 20 years ago.

TFL, which is run by the mayor, scrapped its promise to make a quarter of stations step free by 2010 and a third by 2013.

Now, 65 of the 270 stations have step free access from street to platform, but most of those still have a gap between the platform and train.

Wheelchair access will be available at locations key to the Games ? Stratford for the Olympic Park, Southfields for tennis at Wimbledon, and Green Park for equestrian events ? but, not at the vast majority of tourist hot spots, including Piccadilly Circus, Notting Hill, and Covent Garden.

Grey-Thompson said upgrades had to be chosen carefully as ?it costs more than 100 million pounds to make a central London station wheelchair-accessible.?

Meanwhile, the bus system was completely overhauled in 2007.

?Our bus fleet is the most accessible fleet in the world ? with every one of our 8,500 buses low-floor wheelchair-accessible and fitted with ramps,? said Wayne Trevor, Accessibility Manager for TFL. However, only 60 percent of bus stops are fully accessible.

?We get a lot of complaints from wheelchair users left to the side of the road,? said Lianna Etkind, Campaigns and Outreach Coordinator for disabled rights group Transport for All.

Californian Hamilton said she often feels like a ?third-class citizen? as her husband begs drivers to let her on and one in four drive away without her.

?Drivers are definitely required to pick up disabled passengers,? TFL said in an email response, adding that passengers are encouraged to lodge complaints which can result in driver retraining or dismissal.

The installation of tactile paving and audio-visual displays has assisted blind and deaf passengers, but recession-induced staff cuts have made it harder to receive personal assistance.

Carole Cherrington, a blind 43-year-old who has lived in London her entire life, took the Underground on her own for the first time in March. She said she had to rely on a stranger to get to her destination and found the journey ?extremely distressing.?

TFL has since provided her with a ?travel buddy? free of charge, but she said: ?I feel excluded by society in being able to get around independently; I hope having the Paralympics here will bring more awareness.?

Michael Theobold, who is profoundly deaf, said that he had encountered dangerous situations when he couldn?t hear last-minute audio announcements.

The 64-year-old former teacher recalled in an email interview that he was unable to hear a warning to move along the track at Marble Arch station.

?There was a sudden surge of people and I was very nearly knocked off balance on to the electrified track,? he said.

?An army of volunteers?
Transport for London is eager to ensure that the Olympics run without a hitch.

?An army of volunteers will be drafted in to assist our operations during Games time,? TFL said in an email.

Scores of extra buses, manual track-to train ramps, and fast-response elevator engineers will also be brought in.

Transport for All?s Etkind said she was hopeful that the extra resources would help disabled visitors get around the city successfully.?

?It?s great that TFL is improving access to the Underground during the Olympics and Paralympics. But access and inclusion isn?t just for Games time, it?s for life,? she said.

Junar Nabs $1.2M To Help Small Government, Business Unlock Big Data

Last month, San Francisco unveiled a new cloud-based open data site as part of its move to adopt cloud services and, in turn, to encourage open government, transparency and accountability by improving access to data and information. San Francisco is hardly alone -- both public and private sectors in the U.S. and around the world are pulling back the curtain on their data. Of course, opening the doors is one thing, but unlocking and making sense of that data? Not quite as easy. That's why Santiago and Palo Alto-based Junar has developed a platform that allows businesses, governments, and NGOs not only to unleash their data in order to drive collaboration and enhance transparency, but to remove the headache of having to develop their own proprietary software. And to fuel its initiative, the startup announced today that it has raised $1.2 million in seed funding from Aurus, Austral Capital, and a host of national and Latin American angel investors.

Robert Pattinson Denies He's 'Catching Fire' In 'Hunger Games' Franchise

Pattinson was initially 'curious' about rumors he would be playing dreamy tribute Finnick Odair, before shutting them down.

With one saga over, "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson says he has no plans to join that other super-buzzy and much-loved book-to-movie franchise, "The Hunger Games."

In an interview with USA Today, Pattinson denied rumors that he was in talks to play the dreamy tribute Finnick Odair in the next "Hunger Games" movie, "Catching Fire."

"I woke up this morning and saw all these things about me being cast in 'The Hunger Games'," he said while promoting "Cosmopolis" in Cannes over the weekend. "I was kind of curious for a second. So I called my agent. My agent was like, 'No.' [My agent] was like, 'No one's going to offer you that part.' I was like, 'Thanks for the reassurance.' "

Finnick appears in both "Catching Fire" and the last book in the franchise, "Mockingjay." Ten years before he entered the arena in "Catching Fire," he had won the Hunger Games at age 14 using a Trident. Although they sometimes have a shaky relationship, Finnick and Katniss eventually become friends and ultimately join a group of rebel sharpshooters called Squad 451.

While Finnick's casting remains up-in-the-air, the cast is expected to hit the set for the second "Hunger Games" film sometime in the coming months. And, shortly after Francis Lawrence got the directing gig for the flick, Josh Hutcherson opened up to MTV News about the director shake-up.

"I think he'll stay true to the first one. Gary's already established a tone and a theme and kind of a whole world. So I think Francis will operate within that. I hope so," he said. "At the same time, if I were directing, I'd want to bring my own thing to it. So I hope he brings something different to it, which I'm sure he will."

I have an i5 2500k, 2 x 6970 2GB CrossfireX, 16GB DDR3, and a helluva nice PSU (Seasonic Platinum 1000).

While it is true that PC gaming can be cheaper, if you want the best, you are going to have to pay for it.

Egypt's first free presidential election could be heading for a contest between an Islamist candidate and a former air force chief who was a leading member of ousted leader Hosni Mubarak's last government.

According to results from 18 out of 27 areas ? put together by the Ahram Online newspaper?? Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Mursi was ahead with 25.59 percent of the vote, while Mubarak's former prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq, was just behind at 25.05 percent.

Leftist Hamdeen Sabahy was in third, according to Ahram's figures, at 21.22 percent.?They and the other candidates are vying for two places in a final run-off election on June 16 and 17.

Official results are not expected until Tuesday.?

'I'm in shock'
Young Egyptian revolutionaries who helped topple Mubarak now face what they see as a dispiriting choice between a conservative Islamist and a hardline member of the old guard.?

"To choose between Shafiq or Mursi is like being asked do you want to commit suicide by being set on fire or jump in a shark tank," Adel Abdel Ghafar wrote on Twitter.

In Egypt's elections, politics is a new family affair

Tareq Farouq, 34, a Cairo driver, told Reuters he was in shock.?"How could this happen? The people don't want Mursi or Shafiq. We're sick of both. They are driving people back to Tahrir Square," he said, referring to the home of the long-running protest camp.

Voters lined up in Cairo to choose from five leading candidates: a socialist, two Islamists, and two with ties to former President Hosni Mubarak. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

This week's first-round vote has polarized Egyptians between those determined to avoid handing the presidency back to a man from Mubarak's era and those fearing an Islamist monopoly of ruling institutions.

'We want to live ... like human beings': Egyptians vote

The election marks a crucial step in a messy and often bloody transition to democracy, overseen by a military council that has pledged to hand power to a new president by July 1.?

The second round threatens further turbulence. Opponents of Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister, have vowed to take to the streets if he is elected, Reuters reported.?But to supporters, Shafiq's military background offers reassurance that he can restore security, a major demand of the population 15 months after Mubarak's ouster.?

Israel nervous
Many Christians, who form about a tenth of Egypt's 82 million people, complained of discrimination in Mubarak's day, but were likely to have voted for Shafiq in preference to an Islamist.?

A victory for Mursi, Reuters said, could worsen tensions between resurgent Islamists and the powerful army, which sees itself as the guardian of the state.?

Egypt's elections: A struggle between secularism and political Islam

If Mursi becomes president, Islamists will control most ruling institutions ??but not the military ??in Egypt, the most populous Arab nation, consolidating electoral gains made by fellow-Islamists in other Arab countries in the past year.?

"Now Egyptians will have to choose between the revolution and the counter-revolution. The next vote will be equivalent to holding a referendum on the revolution," Mohamed Beltagy, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood's party, told Reuters.?

Israel has nervously watched the Islamist rise, especially in Egypt, its old enemy until a 1979 peace treaty. Mursi vaguely advocates a "review" of the pact, but the Brotherhood says it will not tear it up. Shafiq has vowed to uphold it.?

The Brotherhood announced early on Friday that the run-off would be between Shafiq and Mursi after almost all votes were counted, Reuters said.

A member of Shafiq's campaign also said Mursi and Shafiq were in the lead, but that counting was not complete, Reuters reported.?Aides to other candidates consistently put Mursi ahead but gave shifting tallies for second place through the night.?

Crystal Bell: 'Revenge' Finale Recap: The Most Shocking Death Ever

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 1, Episode 22 of ABC's "Revenge," entitled "Reckoning."

Just when I had gotten to the point where I thought Emily Thorne's revenging was getting stale, "Revenge" managed to pull off one hell of an OMG! finale.

To be honest, the first 50 minutes left much to be desired, but as per usual, "Revenge" pulled out all the stops during the final 10 minutes. There were cliffhangers on top of cliffhangers -- and more than one life was potentially lost.

Let's start with the biggest OMG! moment of the night: Victoria Grayson is reportedly dead. Yes, you read that correctly. "Revenge" just seemingly killed off its biggest star -- the ever-scheming, bandage dress-wearing, icy Victoria.

Queen Vic was last seen boarding a plane to D.C. to testify for David Clarke's innocence, but that aircraft did not reach its final destination. Instead, it blew up on the tarmac, thanks to a bomb planted by the White Haired Man. When Emily spared the life of the creepy Initiative operative -- the assassin who killed her father -- she didn't quite realize what she had wrought.

But is Queen Vic really dead? I don't think so. Victoria knew that what she was doing was dangerous, and it looked like there was some hesitation as she was boarding the plane (in slow mo, of course). Conrad warned her that if she proceeded with the trial, her life would be at risk, and although at the time, she ignored him, Victoria has always managed to stay one step ahead of her estranged husband. So why would she start playing dumb now?

Not to mention that Madeleine Stowe gives one of the most wickedly enjoyable performances on TV. "Revenge" just won't be the same without Queen Vic throwing shade at her frenemies from across the room. My bet is that she wasn't on the plane when it exploded -- however, Lydia probably was, but I don't really care about her, so that's OK.

Queen Vic isn't the only Grayson with a questionable future. As predicted in last week's recap, Charlotte tries to kill herself. Little Grayson just wasn't able to deal with the news of her mother's death -- and when Declan told her to get lost -- she swallows a bunch of pills. The last we see of Charlotte, she's unconscious in Conrad's arms.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if Little Grayson died. She's the worst part of the entire series. In her last mean girl act of the season, she exploited Declan's new friend from Yonkers and embarrassed her infront of the entire school. However, if Charlotte does die, Declan would obviously feel responsible for her death, but he wouldn't have much to do without his partner-in-crime. For that reason, I could see Charlotte surviving her overdose. I mean, these two useless characters need each other.

Although, I really hope they ship her off to a psychiatric ward for most of the second season. She's such a waste of space. I'd rather spend more time watching Emily's bitch face than I would watching Charlotte deal with her white girl problems.

On to the next OMG moment: Amanda is back (ugh), and she's pregnant with Jack's baby! (UGH!)

Was it really too much to ask for Takeda to kill off Faux-Manda? I really thought we were over her and her trashy short-shorts. Sadly, I was wrong. Now she's back and ready to wreck havoc on Emily and Jack's relationship.

Just when Emily was going to tell Jack the truth about everything, including her feelings for him, Faux-Manda appears out of nowhere and ruins everything. Of course, Jack is too good of a guy to ditch his pregnant kinda-sorta-girlfriend, but you can tell that he was a little disappointed to see Emily walk out of the Stowaway.

It's hard finding love in a hopeless place, Emily. Just ask Rihanna.

Finally, the last OMG moment of the finale sets up Emily's main objective for Season 2: Her mother isn't dead!

The Americon Initiative is one shady organization. Not only did they orchestrate David Clarke's death, but they also have something to do with Emily's mother's disappearance.

Just when Emily thought all of the evidence against Conrad was lost in the explosion, her BFF Nolan surprises her -- and once again proves why he's the best character on the entire series. He backed up the hard drive (full of evidence) before he handed it over to the SEC guy.

You may have a silly haircut, Nolan, but you're so smart! Emily and Nolan then watch some of the footage Nolan uncovered, and they discover that Victoria Grayson knew more about Emily's mother than she let on.

Nolan tells her that her mother is alive, to which Emily says her last line of Season 1 while staring at the video: "Let it play."

I really hope Victoria isn't actually dead. There's so much potential for Emily and Queen Vic to team up and take down Conrad and the Initiative that wants to see them all dead. Between Emily's bitch face and Victoria's shade, they'll be able to take down even the strongest of enemies.

More Notable Moments of the Season 1 Finale:

• Daniel and Emily are officially dunzo, thanks to Ashley. It looks like we're going to see more of Daniel and Ashley together (shudder) next season. The Grayson Global duo are already getting cozy.
• Victoria finally learns that Conrad had David killed, which only makes her want to bring down Conrad even more.
• When Daniel tried to give Queen Vic major attitude, she SLAPS him across the face. It's one of the episode's finest moments. There's nothing I love more than a good Victoria slap.
• Obvious foreshadowing alert: In the final minutes of "Reckoning," Conrad burns a photo of Victoria and Lydia.

Nolan: "You are way outmatched by that crazy albino."

Emily: "Nolan, if I don't make it out of this, tell Jack that I love him."

Emily: "I'm watching you become everything you said you never wanted to be."

List of Species in Messiah:

Please read all

{The view of species and places is generalised and does not count for individual differences. Therefore your own characters may differ and disagree with such views. I've left quite a few species brief so players can make up things by themselves. If you're sharing your species with other players please do not forget to communicate with them}

Elves:

Elves are very intelligible but ignorant creatures. Living in a tightly knitted society the majority of Elves exist in Ville. The Elves are a very moral species and abide by their laws and heirarchies religiously. Social status is extremely important to them therefore you won't find an Elf who disregards their place in the social heirarchy. A way of displaying physical importance is to have short hair. Elves who have short hair are of high importance and Elves who have long hair are of low or no importance.
Importance/status is gained through being a member of the council or through being high up in the army. Wealth does not gain you importance. You could be the wealthiest Elf in all of Ville and still have hair flowing down to your toes! Status is earnt through the approval of the society.

There are two kinds of Elf. Long eared and short eared. Long eared elves are naturally inferior to short eared elves. Why this is I'm not so sure but every society has it's petty segrogations. Having long ears makes it much more difficult to gain any kind of status in society but some of these elves have managed it.
(Why some elves are born with long ears instead of short is almost like asking why someone was born with big ears instead of small- natural mutation of the genes over time)

Elves were once human. They have evolved since the dark ages through the use of natural magic and have since departed from their origins to create a new species.

Species

It's not unheard of for Elves to look down on their origins. They sometimes view humans as inferior, undeveloped creatures in comparison to themselves.

They find both Nymphs and Water shrews to be neutral creatures but envy them for their 'intimacy with nature'.

Any other species they are unaware of and are yet to make judgement over.

Places
They find mechanic city repulsive.
They find the Isle of facination to be an embarrasing place for debaunchry and other such things and keep well away.
They find Ramsdale Prison to be a typical result of human law. To imprison kinds into a cage like animals.

Nymph:

Nymph's are the physical version of tree spirits. One of the most nature inclined creatures to walk Messiah they can understand nature and bend it to their will. (move trees etc) They live in small settlements but it's not uncommon for them to wonder alone. Free as the wind they dont fool around with many laws. Nymphs are creatures of old and live for a lengthy amount of time. They are land creatures and cannot swim so fear vast amounts of water.

Species

Nymphs find humans to be young, clumsy creatures who struggle to learn from past mistakes. Like fashion they go around in circles.

Elves are ignorant creatures. They think they are in touch with nature when infact they are ignoring the majority of it. Selfish on their island they fail to help other creatures therefore forgetting that nature isn't just trees and plants.

Water shrews keep to themselves. They don't communicate often. The nymths stay in their forests and the water shrews keep to their ponds.

Places:

Mechanic city is faraway from any forest so not many Nymphs have been there. They can see it from the tops of tall trees through. A bright light in the distance reflecting the sun.

Isle of facination is full of wildlife and nature and so it isnt uncommon for adventurous Nymphs to live there. They find it very exciting and after decades of chilling in a forest talking to trees it's certainly refreshing for them to play amongst young creatures.

The Nymphs were chased from the island that holds ramsdale long ago by the rowdy creatures who built it. The sudden disturbance sent them fleeing to the outskirts. They didnt wish for the prison to be built on their land. Those who know of it do not hold fond memories of the place.

Water shrew:

These are water based creatures who can survive for shocking amounts of time under-water like a fish. They do need to surface though. Water shrews live in a neutral society with its own laws. (more laws than that of a nymth but less than an elf) They are also creatures of old and live for a long time. They live in beautiful underwater villages and have a peaceful existance below the water-line.

Species:

Water shrews are very dis-interested in other species. If they hold opinions for any of them it's very much their own opinions.

Places:

Same goes for places. Water shrews dont often wonder above land. Like the elves they are quite happy to live in their own little worlds.

Occupations, species and individuals who dislike one another generally:

Sky pirates and Dragons riders: DISLIKE : Both want to rule the skies and disapproval of the other. Sky pirates think Dragon riders are rogues on the backs of beasts looking for a jail sentence with their irresponsible, dangerous flying techniques. Dragon riders think Sky pirates are villians in little wooden tubs content on plundering the skies with their ugly flying pieces of wood. Both live together and scwabble constantly.

Elves and Humans: DISLIKE : It's an origin thing.
