Exploring The Life Of The Home Improvement Contractor | Best ...

29th June 2012 Cat: Home Products & Services with

There are many varieties of home improvement that one might consider for a home.? These home improvement jobs may perhaps be to increase comfort of the home, to repair damage the home may have suffered, to increase space through drywall (click here for more info), to further improve the energy efficiency of the home or to transform it into a safer place to live.? When considering any of these improvements or renovations, one of the first steps ought to be to call a company that specializes in general contracting.?? The contracting company has the ability to take a lot of the headaches from such a home improvement project.

Whether considering upgrading the HVAC system, converting an unfinished basement into a recreation room, adding a whole new wing to the house or some other major home improvement task, the general contractor can supply a very important service.? The contractor oversees the project and takes care of the scheduling.? The larger the project the more helpful the contractor is.
?
Cost Of A General Contractor
The expense of the general contractor is going to be largely based on the total cost of the project.? While some contractors charge a flat fee, others charge you a percentage based on the total price of the materials and labor for the project.? The percentage charged may perhaps be as low as 10 percent or as much as 25 percent, but currently most contractors that work on the basis of a percentage are charging approximately 15 percent.

Scheduling Of The Project
The largest factor to a winning project is scheduling.? Most home improvement projects require that certain steps be completed before the next one can take place.? The general contractor helps to ensure that as soon as one step in the project is finished, the next professional is there to begin his or her task.? This requires careful planning.? Since the flooring cannot be completed until the rough in plumbing has been done, it?s essential to leave plenty of time for the plumber to finish his task prior to when the carpenters return to lay the flooring.? At the same time, it is also important that the project not be left sitting for days waiting around for the carpenters to have time for them to return. At each step of the steps involved in renovation, scheduling is the key.?

Buying Materials Needed
It is also important that the materials needed to complete the project be on hand when the professionals arrive to use them.? The homeowner doesn?t want to pay the wages of the professionals while they wait for a delivery that should have been made 2 weeks ago.? The general contractor is also responsible for ordering and scheduling delivery of products when needed.? In many cases the general contractor does enough volume business that he qualifies for discounts with suppliers and is also in a position to pass the price savings on to the homeowner.

When considering a home renovation project, most homeowners will find the help of a general contractor to be very important.? The general contractor can schedule the pros needed for the project to come on the right days to finish the entire renovation in the shortest time possible.

LETTER: Hey, Mayor Bloomberg, come see for yourself

Dear Editor:

With regard to New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg owning one of our lovely homes here in Wawarsing, uur lives have been ruined by the neglect of the city?s Department of Environmental Protection!

The emotional stress of daily life is compounded by the terrible living conditions we live under: overflowing septic systems which are unable to compete with the trespassing aqueduct tunnel water, overflowing wells tainted with ecoli and homes infested by mold growing out of control.

Yes, Mayor Mike, we have a wonderful piece of property just ready for you to move into our soggy community.

We suffer, assigning points by inspections, ranking neighbor against neighbor, for a potential "buyout" program with some relief in sight. In a perfect world, neighbors help each other and do unto others as you would want them to do unto you. Bloomberg?s DEP has kept its image of high and mighty, need-to-know basis attitude, true to form.

For the greater good, nine million people in New York City can turn on their water faucets and have "great Upstate drinking water," while residents in Wawarsing, some 60-plus strong at present count, have become an acceptable casualty of just doing business. This is just plain unacceptable!

I sit on those PAC committees, disgusted with the spin DEP continues to put out there for us to digest. Knowing leaks were present back as far as 1958, public outcry from Wawarsing in the late ?80s to early ?90s. DEP came, looked and went away. later on only to say at one of our meetings, "Yes we have a leak" and "we should have been keeping a closer eye in Wawarsing." More studies, more time, more loss.

I live in one of those affected homes. We?ve raised our family for over 27 years. Like our neighbors, we have lost washers, dryers, furnaces, hot water heaters and lots of personal property items.

So please excuse me for not showing too much excitement or appreciation for "only" current market value on my home. We all know the state of today?s economy. Continued...

This problem, Bloombergs problem, has become our problem. Too bad we?re not located in one of the five boroughs. I?ve seen how fast his department works during water breaks causing flood damage to its residents of the Big Apple.

So yes, we are "eligible" on one of the two available buyout program options. Thanks a lot. This pesky colonist is telling the truth and it is high time DEP became transparent and did likewise.

Mayor Bloomberg, we once again invite you to our Wawarsing homes to see these conditions.

EMI half sold as Sony closes $2.2B publishing deal

(AP) ? A group led by Sony Corp. said Friday it has purchased Britain's EMI Music Publishing for $2.2 billion from Citigroup, creating the world's largest music copyrights company with a catalog that includes hits from Motown, The Beatles, Jay-Z and Norah Jones.

Now all that remains of the storied British label group is its recorded music division, which Vivendi's Universal Music Group has offered to buy for $1.9 billion. That deal is being looked at by European and U.S. regulators. If they approve some time later this year, the world's major music companies will be reduced from four to three.

Recorded music companies have argued that they need to combine resources to survive in an industry crippled by piracy, as the legitimate digital distribution of music is still in its infancy around the globe.

But publishing has remained a steady business over the years, despite the onslaught of the Internet and the ongoing decline of compact disc sales, because of its diverse revenue sources. And by acquiring EMI, Sony/ATV, a 50-50 joint venture between Sony and the Michael Jackson estate, will control just over 2 million copyrighted songs. The new entity is estimated to capture nearly a third of publishing revenue in the world.

Size wouldn't necessarily give the company the ability to use its dominance to boost licensing revenue, Sony/ATV argued, because licensing rates are closely controlled by laws in various countries.

Friday's clearance by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission means that regulators agreed the new entity would not have the market power to raise rates on its own or coordinate such a move with others, which could have affected the price of songs. The FTC's conclusion of its investigation without objections was the final hurdle before the deal's closing was announced later in the day.

"We've gone over the rainbow and hit the pot of gold," said Sony/ATV CEO Marty Bandier, adapting a lyric from "The Wizard of Oz" song "Over the Rainbow," which is part of the EMI catalog. Bandier ran EMI's publishing division for 17 years.

Last year, publishing companies generated about $3.9 billion in revenue, relatively unchanged over the last several years, according to Simon Dyson, editor of Music & Copyright, an industry newsletter.

Publishing's revenues have held up better than the recording side because there are more streams of revenue that aren't tied to declining sales of compact discs. Publishers and songwriters share a cut of about 8 to 9 cents for every 99-cent download purchased from online retailers like Apple Inc.'s iTunes. But they also make money from radio airplay, free online streaming and the placement of songs in movies, TV shows and commercials.

Sony/ATV's 11.7 percent share and EMI's 19.3 percent share means the combined entity will now control about 31 percent of the global market for music copyrights, leapfrogging past the 22.2 percent share of Universal Music Publishing Group, Dyson said. The next largest is Warner Music Group Corp.'s Warner Chappell with 14.1 percent. All independent music publishers combined have a 32.6 percent share.

Dyson said Sony/ATV will have increased leverage in setting licensing rates for new digital music startups if it chooses to bypass royalty collection societies like The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in the U.S. But he acknowledged that would require a major shift in how most business is conducted.

"If you're a big publisher with a 10 percent lead, you're going to have a big say in what licensing rates are," Dyson said.

Fostering fair competition in the digital landscape was one of the concerns of regulators, according to Sony/ATV's Bandier. The company argued that even if there were still four major music publishers, new digital entrants like streaming music services Spotify or Songza would need to go to all of them to start up any business that has a chance to survive. It would need EMI's songs by Kanye West and Rihanna as much as it would need Sony/ATV's Beatles, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift, Bandier said.

"It didn't make a difference if you'd put them together or separate, you'd still have to make a deal if you were a digital service that was just starting," Bandier said in an interview. "We had to convince all of the regulators that that was the case. We're happy we're past that. We never felt it would be an issue."

The transaction was cleared by EU regulators in April. That came after Sony/ATV offered the concession that it would sell the publishing rights to several catalogs as well as the works of 12 artists including Ozzy Osbourne, Robbie Williams, and Ben Harper.

Besides Sony, the buyers of EMI Music Publishing include the Michael Jackson estate and several investment funds including United Arab Emirates government-backed fund Mubadala Development Co.

Citigroup seized EMI from private equity firm Terra Firma in February 2011 after Terra Firma defaulted on $5.5 billion in debt stemming from its 2007 purchase of the music company.

Life on Saturn moon? Discovery of hidden ocean on Titan tantalizes. (+video)

Scientists already knew Titan has the building blocks for organic life in abundance. Now, the discovery of a underground sea with liquid water adds another intriguing element.?

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / June 28, 2012

This image from NASA's Cassini spacecraft shows Saturn's largest moon, Titan, passing in front of the planet and its rings. A new study released Thursday suggests there may be an ocean below Titan's frigid surface.

Cassini has already found large lakes ? most likely made of hydrocarbons such as liquid methane ? on Titan's surface. But a team of scientists using NASA's Cassini spacecraft have now found indirect but telltale signs of a subsurface sea, perhaps of water as well as ammonia, which would act like antifreeze.?

The data suggest that the ocean, perhaps more than 15 miles deep, is sandwiched between two layers of ice, each less than 60 miles (100 kilometers) thick. It rides atop one layer of ice covering the moon's rocky core and appears to be capped with another ice layer that forms Titan's surface.?

Titan has captured the imagination of scientists hunting for potential habitats for simple forms of life for decades. The temperature at Titan's surface is unbearably cold, minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit. It is paved with the methane ices and other organic solids on which Cassini's Huygens probe landed on Jan. 14, 2005. Its atmosphere is thought to mirror the composition of Earth's atmosphere before the emergence of life some 3.8 billion years ago.?

As hostile as the surface seems to be, "liquids from below would enhance the possibility of life being on the surface" as well as enhancing the possibility of aquatic habitats deep beneath Titan's crust, says Dirk Schulze-Makuch, an astrobiologist at Washington State University in Pullman with a keen interest in Titan's potential habitability.

Thursday's report represents "a nice step forward" in establishing an ocean's presence on Titan, he says.?

The new finding adds Titan to the growing list of moons thought to have subsurface oceans. The icy surface of Jupiter's Europa is believed to hide a vast ocean, and data from Cassini suggest a?large, if not global, region of water or slush under the icy sheath of Saturn's Enceladus.?Neptune's moon Triton may also have a subsurface ocean, and Ganymede and Callisto, two more Jovian moons, also are though to have under-ice seas.

But Titan stands out because researchers know that organic compounds are abundant there.?

Researchers led by Luciano Iess, a scientist at the Universita La Sepienza in Rome, used radio signals from Cassini to track changes in the effect Titan's gravity has on the orbiter during flybys. These readings?allow the team to measure the strength of Titan's gravity in the regions Cassini overflies.

This process allows researchers to "weigh the moon, basically,"?says Sami Asmar, a scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and?a member of the team that reported its results on Sciencexpress, the web outlet of?the journal Science.

If Titan was solid, its gravity field wouldn't change. Even when the moon?comes closest to Saturn on its elliptical orbit ??experiencing Saturn's strongest tug ? its?mass would remain fairly evenly distributed throughout the object.?

But Titan's gravity changes as it progresses along its orbit, the team found. The side of the moon that always faces Saturn bulged?as Titan made its closest approach to the ringed planet.

"We caught Titan in the act of deforming," Dr. Asmar says.

This tidal bulge represents a redistribution of material within the moon's interior ? a telltale sign that there is likely a fluid layer in the moon's interior.

It is as though Titan's rocky core with its icy cover was being drawn through the global subsurface ocean toward Jupiter as the moon made its closest approach, creating the bulge.

The friction of the moon's tidal interaction with Saturn generates heat, which could help sustain the ocean's liquid state ? as is the case within Enceladus and Europa.

The observation of a global ocean beneath Titan's icy exterior is indirect, Asmar says,?"But it's real evidence."

How to Dispute errors on your credit report

Tip #19: Dispute errors on your credit report

?

Contact each of the three major credit bureaus -? TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian ? and get copies of your credit reports and credit scores.? Carefully read over the reports and note any errors.? In writing, contact the credit bureaus and ask that mistakes be removed or investigated.

?

This is called a dispute letter and once it is received, credit bureaus have to investigate your dispute within thirty days of receiving your letter.? It is important to keep a copy of your letter and it is important to note the date the letter was sent.? You should not be accusatory or abusive in your letter ? calmly and clearly state the problem and request an investigation.

?

Note that you are aware the agency is required to investigate the claim within thirty days and note that you will follow up.? Be sure that you do follow up with the issues you raised in your letter ? just because the agency investigates does not always mean that your credit report will end up error-free.

?

Many credit bureaus now make it possible for you to correct errors on your credit report online ? and many have information on their web sites that tells you exactly how disputes must be handled to be effectively removed.? It is important that you follow this information exactly so that the inaccuracies on your credit report are removed promptly and your credit score is updated as soon as possible.

Boston E20 Notes: Building a Unified Communications and ...

I am pleased to be back for my sixth Enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston. Here is a link to a summary of last year?s notes - This is another of my notes. There will be more to follow. I attended Irwin Lazar?s workshop - Building a Unified Communications and Collaboration Roadmap".? Irwin is Vice President, Communications Research, Nemertes Research. Here is the session description for the workshop:

?During this interactive workshop we'll walk through the components of a successful unified communications and collaboration workshop. Using benchmark data gathered from hundreds of companies we'll show you what works, what doesn't work, and what are the key criteria for evaluating success. We'll discuss how to address organizational and management strategies, how to extend collaboration services to remote and mobile workers, how to cross company boundaries, and how to implement new collaboration methods with respect to budgets and the installed base of platforms.?

Irwin?s firm does a lot of research and he provided results of this work through out the session. They did interviews with 240 organizations and conduct in-depth conversations with senior IT professionals. They looked at 16 verticals and the participating companies ranged from fewer than 250 employees (13%), 250 ? 2500 employees (29%, and over 2500 employees (58%).

He defines a road map as a statement of technology direction for the next 3 ? 5 years. Then you turn it over to the architect to design and build it.? He showed a sample road map covering 60 months. It included technologies, funding sources, and other necessary requirements. He showed several samples with different visualizations and areas of focus. Then tend to be complex to read in a single slide. ?Below is a sample chronological road map.

Screen shot 2012-06-22 at 3.50.16 PM
Their research finds that the more business involvement in IT projects, the higher the success. This has been my experience also. It is good to have someone deeply involved in the business going back to IT with the functional problems.? Having multi-disciplinary teams are essential. If work is done in silos it will create problems and overlap. About 60% of companies they surveyed have a business IT liaison role.

What is collaboration? ? Anyway you work with someone else: video, voice, messaging, social computing, document sharing. The latter is often forgotten. About 50% of firms said Sharepoint is their social platform, their document sharing system.

In one case study the primary tools for collaboration: 100% email, in person next, video conferencing, and at the bottom ? social media. Social networking was still low on the priority list.

Unified communications is often defined differently. Now it is the integration of all collaboration tools through any device.? He provided an UC reference architecture (see below). Deployment now: voice ? 100%, IM ? 79%, 75% web conferencing, cell phone integration 65%, on demand video 57%.

Screen shot 2012-06-22 at 3.53.48 PM
Organizational challenges are much bigger than the technical ones, especially with the lack of cross-functional communication. ?So many different groups are looking at different tools raising many issues. Integration of tools remains a big issue despite what the vendors claim. Firms picked this as the biggest challenge ? 58%.

UC&C Road map ? Voice: Issues, own or outsource, who is right vendor, dedicated servers or virtualized, soft phone or desktop phones, how to support analog, SIP trunking, and how to support voice messaging. ?Most firms that take out desktop phones put them back quickly.? But some have successfully done this. There is a shrinking of VOIP deployments. It is very expensive to rip out a working phone system. There are infrastructure costs. Also, BYOD has affected the issue, as people are less interested beyond their device.

Hosted IPT has increased a bit from 12% to 18% are using it and more are evaluating but a large number have no plans.? Many traditional VOIP vendors are hardware centric and expensive so there are challengers. Some (25%) are evaluating MS Lync to replace traditional phone system.? Microsoft said you can do it with what you have and it was 5% last year and now up to 12%. However, the results are mixed.? Some users do not like replacing a phone with a headset. If you are ahappy Microsoft user across other apps then you are more likely to try it.

When asked when you plan to switch to a new phone system. 52% had no plans, 18% planning for 2011, 10% evaluating, 7% planning for 2012, 6% planning for 2013. Question: Are you virtualizing UC application servers? 37% no plans, 20% evaluating, 16% using now, 20% planning for 2011, 5% planning for 2012. The key challenge with UC and virtualization is that the processing power is not there locally and some stuff has to go back to the data center.?

Big issues in unified messaging are the legal issues. The lawyers want voice mail and email separate for archiving and compliance simplicity. These issues often arise after deployment.? They do not want executive status to be transparent. They do not want voice mail stored. There are also Federal rules on electronic communication that need to be interpreted.?

UCC Video roadmap: Percent of employees using desktop: 80% of firms have 0 ? 10% with video capability while 15% have greater than 50%. Users do not seem to want it and network administrators fear the bandwidth issues. ?However, about 50% of firms support extranet video and 40% hare planning on it and only 4% have no plans.

About 35% are using streaming video,15% are planning on it. The integration of consumer devices with enterprise video is on the rise as 41% said it is very important 17% say it is important. One trick is getting users to use it correctly.

Some integration issues: who owns the desktop? How do you manage a multi-vendor solution? ?Big vendors are Cisco, Microsoft, Google, and IBM. ?There is a lot of competition between Cisco and Microsoft. Google is ramping its enterprise offerings but there is still concern about Google as an enterprise SaaS vendor. ?Concerns about Google are highest amongst conservative IT cultures. About 50% of companies are evaluating desktop office apps as a service.

Issues for IM/presence integration: vendor selection, integration, extranet, and mobile.

Most companies (88%) are using web conferencing. However, while it started as an ideal SaaS app, many firms are bring it inside to bring costs down. Some have saved as much 90% of costs.? If you have over 2500 employees it can pay to bring it inside. You do need to create ways to bring in outside users.

It is hard to quantify the social computing investment. There have been some mistakes made in usage of consumer tools such as Facebook. He showed a social computing architecture (see below).

Screen shot 2012-06-22 at 3.59.48 PM
Many companies are using social computing but very few have an enterprise wide strategy. This makes integration very difficult.? The Cisco Quad (now WebEx Social) strategy with integration their communication tools makes this easier.? IBM Connections has capabilities here also. Over 90% measure soft metrics on social and 3% measure quantified metrics. When marketing is the driver of social more firms see social as a success as people are still thinking of social more in external facing terms.

Another big issues is private vs. public access. Can people use Facebook?? Some companies are very open on this and others are against it as a distraction. One company found that Facebook was the highest used application in the enterprise. However, if you block it people can take out their smart phone. The use of guidelines is a better strategy than blocking. There are privacy issues, financial regulations, and e-Discovery (SEC). There have not been test cases on the financial issues but they will be coming.

Their research is consistent with others that only 10% are user and 90% are lurkers. Most companies do find social to be useful.

Ten steps: take ownership, establish policy, engage compliance function early, formal education program, strong password management, content monitoring and logging, education, selective blocking of content, routine audits and review of logs, and regular policy review. ?

Cork Web Design | Advertise Your Business Online

As I drive around Cork and pull up behind trucks and vans one of the first things I ?look for of course is their website address. ?I literally have nearly crashed into the backs of some of them. ?having your website on your vans, paperwork and all visible items makes a big difference for and possible new business. ?You may often see vans parked at the side of the road with their sides placed prominently. ?They do this as it is free?advertising. ?I am not a big fan of it to be honest as it can be a distraction but it does stick in some peoples minds.

I think some people just buy the vans to have them placed at strategic locations.

There are still however tons of businesses who either don?t have a website or haven?t put it on their vans. ?If you don?t have a website maybe it is because you think it is a difficult process to get a website name. ?It isn?t and all you need is a credit or debit card and 15 minutes in front of a PC.

Which Type of Website Address Do I Choose?

As was mentioned in the?Getting Irish Business Online??post recently a large majority of these businesses have opted for the .com domain name over the .ie.

  • A .com domain is one like www.irishtimes.com
  • A .ie domain is like www.rte.ie

In the first instance it costs more for a .ie and more importantly it takes a little longer as the IEDR (Irish Domain Registry) require that your prove ownership before you can get the domain.. ?To create a .com you don?t need to prove ownership of the business name and once someone else doesn?t own the domain name you can get it quite quickly.

So the .coms are winning but the steps to get a .ie shouldnt put you of as it nice to have the Irish TLD.

Sadly when it comes to email addresses it seems that what I see on the back of these businesses vans as I edge closer is that many still have the dreaded eircom.net address and I saw a .iol.ie one the other day.

If you have hosting then it is not a big deal to create a custom email address for your domain and it does look so much more professional.

The Rest of You

There are still a lot of businesses who don?t have an internet presence or at least haven?t put it in their van (stickers anyone?) and it is perfectly understandable as it can be an obstacle for businesses who don?t understand the process and benefits to arriving at a well designed, marketed and publicised website. ?The first of course isn?t enough and I showed this in my recent slideshare.

Your average Joe or Mary Soap in Cork are busy business people and there is a lack of good resources explaining as opposed to selling the benefits of a website presence. ?There is an intuitive feeling that it might help (it often doesn?t) but the skill set of website designers is often lacking in showing this as they believe passionately in the product and not the purpose of it.

As website designers today there is an onus on those who don?t already have the skills to up skill in presentation delivery, marketing and?knowledge?of how the whole internet landscape is going. ?Your end customer will appreciate that you are not just a website delivery mechanism but a company and person who delivers solutions.

Murdoch?s tough call: Split News Corp. to survive

Oli Scarff / Getty Images

Rupert Murdoch has reportedly been against splitting up his News Corp. media empire.

By Roland Jones

Rupert Murdoch?s driving ambition may have finally met its match.

On Tuesday, his News Corp. media empire confirmed reports that it is thinking of restructuring into two separate, distinct, publicly traded companies -- a move that would effectively bring to an end Murdoch?s decades-long drive to pull together the disparate strands of his empire into one coherent company.

Harder still for Murdoch would be the fact that a division of the media giant would almost certainly mean cordoning off the newspaper business that once was the core of Murdoch?s company, which he has grown from a single Australian newspaper he inherited in the 1950s.

?This is a sign of the times,? Barton Crockett, an analyst with Lazard Capital Management, told CNBC.

?A lot of us were surprised that they're actually taking this step, because Rupert?s ties to newspapers are so strong and so historical, I was doubtful they?d go there as long as he was calling the shots. But they are, and I think that?s showing he?s evolving with the times, and the company is,? he added.

The restructuring of News Corp. would, according to a report in The New York Times, likely cleave its more profitable entertainment unit -- driven by News Corp.?s movie studio and powerful television networks -- from the smaller, less profitable, publishing business that includes The Wall Street Journal, The Times of London, The New York Post and the HarperCollins book business.

Rob Enderle, an analyst with Enderle Group, said the main motivation for dividing News Corp. in two is likely the protection of the Fox movie studio and television networks that are now the most profitable parts of the media empire.

Murdoch is likely to want to insulate this part of the business from the fallout from the phone hacking scandal that has led to the closure of the News of the World tabloid in the U.K., halted Murdoch?s BSkyB takeover bid and prompted the arrest of several key figures, he said.

?There has been a lot of concern about how broad the company?s holdings have become, and that if something were to happen to any one part of it, it could bring down the whole of it,? said Enderle.

The split is also likely driven by shareholder unrest over the direction of the company.

Less concerned about journalistic ethics and more worried about the company?s bottom line, News Corp. shareholders have become more vocal since the hacking scandal broke, and they are more likely to want the company to focus on its more productive entertainment assets, which generated $23.48 billion in revenue in the year ended June 2011, nearly three times the $8.83 billion in revenue generated by the publishing business.

There were also concerns that the size of the company could raise antitrust concerns if it wanted to engage in corporate acquisitions, Enderle added. A split would realign the company and enable it to focus it on each core operation, he said.

?This split is clearly along functional lines,? Enderle said. ?The resulting companies should be easier to manage and focus, because it really did look as if News Corp. was losing track of each unit?s focus.?

News of the potential plan to split the media empire in two has certainly won the approval of the market, with shares of News Corp. rising more than 8 percent in trading Tuesday.

Media conglomerate Viacom took a similar path in 2005 when it split into two companies, leaving the television company CBS as a standalone company. Both companies have thrived since the move.

Murdoch has reportedly been against splitting up News Corp., but may have been swayed by the views of his second in command, Chase Carey, who is said to regard the publishing industry as mature and unlikely to yield substantial profits. Earlier this year, Carey made it clear that the company?s management team has considered a split.

?For Murdoch it has been all about empire building, about maximizing power and control, but the only thing that leaves you with is something unmanageable,? Enderle said, adding that it?s rare to see someone like Murdoch, who is clearly oriented toward status and power, step in and break up a company.

?The board is subordinate to Murdoch, so it probably really took a real and present threat to the overall entity for him to step back and realize there?s a need to restructure,? he added.

The outlook for Murdoch?s beloved newspaper business remains gloomy, Enderle added.

?By providing more focus for the unit they might be able to turn it into something more profitable, or find a buyer that will do something else with it, but the trend right now is away from publishing,? he said.

Crockett noted that the phone hacking scandal presented an opportunity for News Corp. to rethink its operations and improve the situation for shareholders. A division of the business will lead to a stronger company, he said.

?We?ve gone from lemons to lemonade,? said Crockett. ?I think it?s something that will make News Corp. a stronger business and a better stock.?

How would investors be impacted if News Corp. split?

Sen. Hatch looking to avoid revolt within GOP

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Over the past two years, GOP primaries have ended the careers of several veteran Republican politicians who were backed by the party's establishment. Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch is seeking to avoid the same fate in his first primary challenge since winning office in 1976.

Hatch's race is the premier event as several states hold primaries Tuesday. Among them is New York, where 82-year-old Rep. Charlie Rangel is running for a 22nd term, the first time he's faced voters since the House censured him 18 months ago for failing to pay all his taxes and for filing misleading financial disclosure statements.

Those issues, plus changed demographics in the Democrat's redrawn Harlem district, could pose a re-election challenge for Rangel, who has also faced some health problems. But Rangel told CNN on Tuesday: "I got a clean bill of health. I'm fired up and ready to go."

A few months ago, Hatch was considered vulnerable ? like his former Republican colleague Robert Bennett, who was booted from the Senate two years ago at the Utah nominating convention, and like six-term Republican Sen. Richard Lugar, who lost in last month's Indiana GOP primary.

But Hatch, 78, is now viewed as the heavy favorite in Tuesday's matchup against former state Sen. Daniel Liljenquist. Hatch has enjoyed a huge resource advantage that let him unleash the most expensive and detailed campaign operation in Utah's history. Hatch raised about $10 million, and that has allowed the campaign to contact thousands of voters individually and to spread two messages on the airways: He has the backing of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, and his seniority on the Senate Finance Committee would benefit the state.

Liljenquist, 37, is a relative newcomer to the Utah political scene. He enjoyed recognition for leading efforts to overhaul the pension system for the state's employees during his first term as a legislator. Instead of opting to rise through the state's political ranks, he chose to take on the state's best-known political figure.

Liljenquist has seized on voters' concerns about the growing national debt and has tried to make the case that Hatch has been a major contributor to that debt by voting continually to raise the federal debt ceiling, supporting a Medicare drug benefit and working with the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy to establish the State Children's Health Insurance Program.

Utah has a unique nominating system, and Hatch was widely viewed as most vulnerable when about 4,000 GOP stalwarts gathered at the state's nominating convention in April. Delegates at the convention tend to be more conservative than the GOP electorate. The Hatch campaign team spent months behind the scenes trying to generate a new crop of delegates to the convention, and that work paid off, with the large majority of this year's delegates being new to the process. In the end, Hatch won 59.2 percent of the delegates, just shy of the 60 percent he needed to avoid a runoff with Liljenquist.

The Hatch campaign includes many of the state's top political consultants and strategists. It also hired some of the tea party activists who had helped generate Sen. Mike Lee's win two years ago.

"It was an organizational effort beyond anything the state has seen before," Hatch campaign manager Dave Hansen said. "Fortunately, we had the resources to pay the costs on that organizational effort."

Much of the money fueling Hatch's campaign came from corporations and trade groups that frequently have business before the Senate Finance Committee, which Hatch probably would chair if the GOP can win the Senate in November. Hansen said Hatch is not beholden to any particular group other than the residents of Utah.

Liljenquist's camp said it has motivated supporters who are expected to head to the polls in a low-turnout election. Holly Richardson, a campaign spokeswoman, said that in recent years candidates such as Lee and Rep. Jason Chaffitz fared better than pre-election polls had said they would. She said the campaign was reaching out to voters who don't normally participate in primaries.

The winner of the GOP primary will be the huge favorite to win the general election in November against Democratic candidate Scott Howell.

In New York, Rangel was fending off four challengers including state Sen. Adriano Espaillat and former Clinton White House official Clyde Williams in a newly drawn Manhattan and Bronx district that is now majority Hispanic. Espaillat, a native of the Dominican Republic, has strong support from the district's large Dominican community, but Rangel is still widely popular in Harlem and has the support of labor unions and most of the state's Democratic lawmakers. Andrew Cuomo, New York's popular Democratic governor, endorsed Rangel last week.

Democrats also faced a potentially problematic upset in Brooklyn in the race to succeed retiring Democratic Rep. Ed Towns. Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries has been favored to win the race and has received the endorsement of most Democratic leaders but is facing strong competition from Charles Barron, a city councilman and former Black Panther known for making incendiary comments about Jews and gays. Barron last week received the endorsement of former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.
